This sale has been going on for 13 years. A spring sale is held in April and a fall sale in October each year. The sale is labelled as Draft Horse & Mules, but there are some saddle horses sold as well. Several Amish families from Ohio bring their stock as well as folks from neighboring counties here in Virginia and Tennessee.
Most horses are on site by Friday night and ready for previewing. Buggies, tack, and equipment auction is on Friday night. Horse sale starts Saturday morning, about 900a. There are tack vendors set up for the duration of the sale. Lots of harness, halters, and such and even some saddle wares. Of course, there’s funnel cakes and event concessions.
April sale of this year, according to my notes, ran hip numbers through 260. Of course some were no-sales, and there’s always some no-shows. Roxie, the chunky version of TLH, sold for $2500 and was the high-dollar of the day, per my notes. A couple of teams of mules were declined at $2500, owner wanted $3000+. Lots of sales around the $300-$400 range. Ah, something for everyone.
Is always an interesting way to spend the day. If you get tired of watching the livestock, there’s always plenty of entertaining people-watching to be had.
Look for a post-sale post here. Will try to get some good pics and take some good notes on the offerings and prices.
